3 Incorrect Reasons to Ride a Motorcycle

Why should you buy a motorbike? Your reasons to ride might be as philosophical as "freedom" or as practical as getting on the ferry first. I've heard worse. But it's hard to be gracious with 3 reasons that are fallacious.

I actually did buy a bike in the beginning to save cash, car insurance was around £1500, bike cost me £100. Plus no lessons to pay for upfront. These days the savings are much less obvious and I get nearly double the MPG from the car

Luckily, I don't live in North America. Motorcycles are cheap in my country. But the best reason I think to ride a motorcycle is if one wants to make large tours around continents or the world, or to commute to work in an agile manner. Then it is really cheap, mobile and pretty hard to beat. If you are doing the world travel thing, it's also good for the enviroment. Few people would walk around the globe, taking a car alone would be too much, while taking a flights is worse I think. Train might be a good option, but then you lose out on mobility. Also, with train and airplane, you see and experience only the stops. With a bike, you can experience everything interesting, yet still remain fast and mobile. As for commuting, it's the cheapest and most mobile way to go to work. After all, who wants to be drenched in sweat after a bicycle ride? Even though it's good exercise, if you need to cycle 20 miles a day, half of it after a tiring workday, you might think twice about it. And a bicycle is even more sensitive to weather than a motorbike. It's faster than public transport, easier to park than a car, and also cheaper if you don't live in north america :)

In NJ USA, it is definitely far cheaper to buy, insure, and run a motorcycle as compared to an auto. Mostly due to insurance costs. Yes, even factoring in needing to replace tires more often, even if you include gear (but really, if you're just commuting, you need a helmet, a decent jacket and half-decent gloves. At some point, if you're spending more on kit, you're really buying a costume, rather than equipment...) The fact is, if it ain't a sportbike and it's paid for, you'll save a few grand each year in insurance (which makes up for rubber expenses) and if you can change oil and adjust valves yourself (or buy something with hydraulic lifters) , you're coming out nicely ahead, especially if you compare the state of a $5k used moto with a $5k used auto. Shit, you can carry a helluva lot more with a simple messenger bag, or you can get something like a NT650v, which are cheap, can go 100k+ miles no problem (and are often seen for sale with more like 15k miles), and they even have some luggage capacity. For the few times/year you need to carry actual big stuff, borrow a friend's ride or rent one, you're still way ahead. But yeah, if you're an overly sensitive diva, you likely couldn't handle the attrition that comes with the savings. But I rode nothing but bicycles (for short trips) and a vt500 Ascot (for long and/or fast trips) for a few years when i was dead-broke as an undergrad. That which does not kill me...

I'm surprised about the saving money part - one of the first things I felt while riding compared to driving a car was less worry about paying for gas or insurance, I go places I would never go in the car because I'd weigh up the cost of a tank of fuel but my bike does 200 miles on $13 so the cost is pretty much removed from the equation when travelling for me. I have to learn how to properly maintain my bike so it doesn't decay too badly sure but that's also a plus - teaching me personal responsibility.

Of the maybe hundred others that have ever thumbs upped or whatever, all have been men, mostly 50+yrs old. That's cool with me, none of my friends ride so I'm always happy to meet new people. Insurance has actually been really, really good but I didn't start riding til 35. The Valkyrie gets about as good mileage as my minivan so... yeah. Sorry environment, ain't you, either. My therapist supports it so I'll just keep riding... Wait.. Can I deduct it as a medical expense?

I first bought a motorcycle as in the UK its so expensive to get a car at the age of 17 even when you factor in the bike, the gear and insurance a bike is just cheaper. I carried on owning/riding motorcycles even though I now have a car as its clears my head and help's my state of mind. For most owning a motorbike is a frame of mind you can't put a cost on.

the funny thing is... I started riding a motorcycle to save money (because public transport is much more expensive), and while I wasn't trying to impress girls, I did unintentionally impress one who ended up becoming my wife... we actually met because she was assigned to be my pillion on a motorcycle trip, and we got along so fabulously the rest is history 😁 And finally, I do believe motorcycles save the environment by reducing congestion on roads. Commuting in Mumbai, one car takes up as much space on the road as 5 if not more motorcycles... if more people used cars the city would simply not move 🤦‍♂️

1.) My BMW bike is 270€ of insurance p.a., liability in the regions of 1 million plus iirc plus theft and vandalism. A BMW 3series is about 2k, last I checked. Same with taxes: I pay 30€ for my bike, a 3 series I can afford and want starts at 230€. Used bike was cheaper to buy than the car, too, the only thing that kicked me in the gonads was gear. I'd actually budget 1k if I were to start over again. Lack of Goretex sucks. 2.) To save the environment... Difficult. With the amount of tires bikes burn through compared to cars, they are highly unlikely to ever beat the hydrocarbon lead that cars have. So even cradle to grave, it's going to be tough. Sure, less material overall, 200 kg of aluminium, rubber etc vs 10 times as much is a big difference in energy requirement during manufacture, but total mileage covered will easily be in favor of cars, especially in north america. Add maintenance items and it seems cars have bikes licked. I'll ignore NOx and CO because those only save people, and people don't save the environment. 3. ) Eh, depends. Sure, in your thirties, bikes are a sign of independence and lack of risk aversion that some may not be looking for, but in your twenties? Absolutely not a problem.

Depending on the bike and the situation, a bike definitely can be wayyyy less expensive than a car. In my experience the insurance costs average about 10% of that of a car, my last commuter bike maxed at 72mpg, and it often allowed me to avoid having to pay for parking. As for getting babes: if you're unable to attract a romantic interest with a bus pass, a motorcycle ain't gonna help. I ride for my mental health. Unlike every single therapist and psychiatrist I've ever talked to, the motorcycle actually helps, and since I'm in the US, it's cheaper. Plus, for some reason, there is a huge stigma around mental health issues. Not as much of a stigma around motorcycles. Insurance for bikes in the US isn't that expensive, I have insurance on two bikes, one of them comp and collision, and I pay less than $400 a year. What seems to cost a lot of money compared to a car is tires, especially if you have something like my DR650 that eats back tires about once every oil change. Doesn't matter if it's a $50 Shinko or a $200 Metzler, that tire is done in 5,000 miles on my DR. A more typical street bike will wear tires down slower, but still not as slow as a car. Gas mileage is almost a wash depending on the bike and the car. I used to have a Street 500 that got 60 mpg on the highway, but a Prius can approach that. I had a Suzuki Intruder 1400 that got about 40 mpg, and a clapped out old Civic could get that kind of mileage.

0:34 in Montana, USA..... you dont need to have insurance on a bike dont even have to wear a helmet.... . sure, this puts you at HIGH RISK if you crash into "lawsuit grandma" in her 1999 buick century.... . but if you have the mental ability to be responsible and safe.... it can save you TONS of money . also, the cost for my 27 year old stupid butt (who has 4 speeding tickets) to insure my 1998 honda magna 750 16 dollars a month.... for FULL coverage . if it didnt have the tickets.... it would be about 9 or 10 dollars a month . . also... the speeding tickets (doing 80 in a 70 zone) cost me 20 dollars..... and 2 points on my license (it may even be only 1 point!) . but ya.... 20 dollars for speeding 20 dollars for no seat belt (and they must pull you over for another reason first..... only then can they give you a belt ticket on-top of the first ticket) . montana understands its 160 miles to a Walmart.... so the saying is "5 you're fine.... 6 you're mine"

Over here, having a motorcycle will save you money. For the price of my well kept 10 years old motorcycle, I would've maybe found a fucked up car from 30 years ago. Not to mention that for a "new driver", insurance for a car can cost almost as much as the car itself. Sure it will be expensive for the motorcycle as well, but surely far less. Of course, there are other factors to consider, but in my experience it has worked fairly well on that regard.

You can save a lot of money if you do it the right way. For about two and a half years all I had was a motorcycle. Fuel was way less, Insurance was 1/10th of my truck, I did all my own maintenance so that wasn't a cost for me.

The thing about riding is you start because its thrilling, the feeling of speed and being one with the machine. However as time goes by and you gain experience and wisdom, and have an above average amount of humility, you know its only a matter of time before you become a statistic and you quit while youre ahead.

Hello from down under, looking at doing light dust riding but mainly commuting. Being 6’2 tall and 120kgs i need tall bike. Wondering if a 2008 1200gs or Ktm 950 Smc would be good ? Thinking GS would be a bit heavy side.. keep up great work ride safe 🍀

It depends on what car you are going from and if toll roads are involved also, I sold our second car that was a newer bmw to get a 2012 cbr 1000rr with very low miles on it to commute on, and it literally saves me $1100 per month in comparison to owning the bmw and driving that to work.

The only comment Ive gotten from a female about my bike is that she 'doesnt like anything about it'. My pillion seat mocks me so Im removing it. Most useless part of the machine.

"affordable insurance is not"... Oh really? I am paying for full coverage insurance on a 2001 Honda Rebel 250, 1988 KZ1000-P7, and a 2002 KZ1000-P21. It costs me $30 a month. Total. All three bikes, $30 a month. It's like $5/mo for the Rebel, $10/mo for the 1988 Police interceptor, and $15/mo for the 2002 Police interceptor. The interceptors are also nothing to to sneeze at. They're not the fastest things on the road (anymore) but they're still more than fast enough to cause extra expense on insurance, especially given that they're collectors items, and they have a widow maker reputation considering most people who ride them do so for like funeral escorts these days, and that is a very dangerous occupation.
