Saw it with the kid this weekend, and it will be adding the Blu Rey to my collection of movies. I disagree as a casual GB fan that they went overboard with the nostalgia. There are things that are clearly meant to be member berries, but if you haven't studied the original in film class to critique it you're not going to be on nostalgia overload with this film. The kids were fine, Phoebe was great in fact, the OG GB's cameo was a little longer than it should have been, but they were fun. All in all this is the first time in two years i've been in a theater, and it was a fun experience.

This was fan service done right. It wasn't perfect, like the weird relationship between the two older teenagers. But for the most part it did it's job.. it entertained without trying too hard with the jokes. That's what killed the 2016 version. Every single character was a comedian and they all tried to add their comedic flair and goofiness to the movie. Hopefully part 2 they'll add their own flair and leave their own stamp in the Ghostbusters universe.

This was a better review of Afterlife than the annoying, out-of-touch, 'NOSTALGIA BAD' parrots over at RLM who, despite harping relentlessly on the soulless rehashing in Afterlife and Rogue One, didn't mind and even enjoyed The Force Awakens, showing how not just hypocritical, but blind they actually are.

This movie had to be safe. It's clear they want reboot the franchise (in a respectable way by honoring and expanding on the past films) and they needed to reel people back in after "That Which We Do Not Speak Of" so they kept it to a safe, familiar plot with lots of fan service. After this movie the sequels will branch out snd explore new themes and concepts. This is equivalent to what The Force Awakens was supposed to be before 8 and 9 went off the rails.

Ok. So I don’t think too many people think about it but this is how I see it... Ghostbusters (1984), Ghostbusters II, Ghostbusters the Video Game, and now Afterlife. I consider the video game the 3rd movie. It’s also written by Dan and Harold along with the original voice actors. Now the mini Staypufts make no sense unless you play the game. I feel like it connects a bit. The video game is majorly unlooked and should be played if you love the series and it fits in perfectly for the time between GBII and Afterlife. I feel like those who haven’t played or seen anything on the game should give it a go.

Some of the "woke" movies and series out there could learn a lesson about giving the audience what they want instead of what the studio wants to throw at them for some underlying message. Along the way, they can throw in some surprises in plot. Fan service movies like Afterlife are still what we need right now, instead of some of the typical cliche action movies. No harm in that. A honest attempt at a good movie in the same tone of the previous ones for the most part.

This is certainly better. I watched the original, played the games, watched the cartoon, and all that leads to this movie. A reboot should only be done when something is not selling anymore, so I don't see why the franchise needed that 2016 junk.

It’s not perfect but you know what? I loved it. Yes the mini Pufts are a bit annoying and there really isn’t any reason they are in the movie at all. But on the whole I thought it was a heartwarming and in places, very touching movie. Would like to see it again. As for 2016, it’s a shame Leslie doesn’t seem to grasp the fact that most people hate it not for having women as the lead characters but for the simple reason that - it’s a shit, unfunny movie.

Red Letter Media put this one in the South Park "Member" Berries category (ie: Do you member crossing the streams? Do you member Slimer?) I'm not interested in seeing kiddie Ghost Busters. I'm tired of reboots of any kind made by Pedowood. I'm tired of MCU, Monsterverse, Star Wars Universe or any kind of "verse". I'm sure that if Disney bought out The Squidgame franchise, we'd have all sorts of unnecessary movies exploring all characters "before they joined Squidgame" or "they didn't really die but this is what happened" or offshoots like "The VIPs" - and it all would be PG13, ethically diverse, played and directed by American actors/directors and obviously China-friendly. Why can't a movie just be a movie instead of a franchise with a political message? For all the money Pedowood has why can't they just make something new, fresh, cool and ACTUALLY ENTERTAINING?

I want to like this movie, but the rehashing just ruins it. Bringing back gozar was a huge mistake. It wasnt fan service, it was a failure to expand on the universe. Everything in the original had some semblance of internal logic and this movie tossed it out. Shoulda gone with whole new baddie, without that 5/10. Definitely leagues' better than 2016, but overall lazy and very poorly executed.

For me the film was almost perfect storywise. Is it a retread of GB1? Yes. Is that ok? Also yes. Why? Because it all makes sense in why it is. In a film where the main storyline is effectively Egon having to go off by himself they needed to have a threat which would be instantly recognisable by the cinema going public, so out of the villains from 1 & 2 Gozer made the most sense. Then when the film has to hit the same beats that the first film did with the summoning of Gozer and the demon dogs possessing people there's no great lenght of time spent on it because we're all very familar with it instead letting us focus on the kids and what they're up to which is great. As for the end, the originals turning up when they did means that while we the watchers get to have our moment of seeing them suited up again it doesn't take away from this being the kids film, or really more precisely Harold's film. I really do hope we get a sequal to this as its now ripe to hand over the reins to a new generation in the same universe with the same style of drama and humor, and not the pratfall shitfest of 2016.

Well I needed a good hard drink after watching this. With none in the cupboard I thought the next best thing is the Critical Drinker! I can almost smell the alcohol through my speakers when listening to this wise scamp. You know, I was beyond excited to see this movie. That corn field teaser trailer and the sound of the proton pack being tested. A gust of wind blows a dirty cover off the ecto-1 and we see the GB logo. Ooof! Chills. Dynamite stuff, proper 80's movie vibes. I'm a massive GB fan, I've been watching the original ghostbuster movies since I was a child, over 30's years worth of watches as a go-to late night background movie. It's never got old for me. In early 90's I was in junior school and some kid had knock-off ghostbusters 3 socks! :D with the ghost hand logo holding up 3 fingers! Haha so I've been waiting for another movie like every body else since then. So I've just watched GB Afterlife; after the movie ended the first thing I thought was "huh"... I got out of my seat, walked to the car, got inside and felt just... sad. Not disappointed or critiquing anythng so much, more like a close friend just moved away or I woke from a bad dream or something. All of your points about the self-aware aspect are so true, but like SO true that I was cringing in parts of the film, the nods and references which people call fan service, nostalgia, easter eggs or whatever you call it would go over most newcomers heads surely? And for people who love all things GB, well I guess i'm the minority because I just couldnt get on board with it. Too obvious you know? It felt waaay heavier than a lot of films which do call backs. Definetly a so-called love letter and if that's what it is then, well fine I guess. But jesus christ. The first 5 mins with Egon are wicked! Great tone, set's up some stakes, mystery and the atmosphere was excellent. Then the plot was just a series of events to bring back the old ghostbusters team up and have some truly forced performance from Bill and Dan, and hey I LOVE both those actors in pretty much everything they've ever done. Ernie was cool though and set-up a better 'potential plot' that the movie itself executes. The Egon ghost sub-plot was kinda interesting but too on the nose with moving lamps and shit. The main cast of characters felt dull, I mean, you know who cares about 'that story' of basically your average family. The humour well, wasnt this supposed to be a comedy? The originals still gives me a chuckle but I didnt once crack a smile. Mini Staypuffs?... Why? A Minion Gremlin Gelatin hybrid thing. Whatever! I used to actually have nightmares of the staypuff marshmallow man as a kid :) taking my roof off and picking me up out of bed! Ha yeah but because that thing was actually massive and menacing you know? Listen, I know how this all sounds but I promise you, I put up with ALOT of tosh from cinema, I love the greats and shites, huh I watched all the Marvel movies before coming across this channel and the voice in my head became this now loud drunk scotish manifestation and all my thoughts were vindicated by El-Critical over here. Fair, honest and fun to pick up on the issues with films that most people gloss over. Reminds me of being in the pubs getting into those drunken deep arguments. Great times! But I am honestly suprised that It's mostly positive reviews for GB Afterlife, I dont want to stir, be harsh or any of that, I dont review, I just like movies. But after all these years, this was the best idea to come out of all that? I couldnt do better, im not a writer or director but I do know films, the good ones hit you in the heart and can move a person to change their morals or how we approach life. Average movies leave the satisfaction of some good old fun and entertainment. Even bad films have their charm and merits for at least the intention and effort that goes into film making. With GB Afterlife, it just felt like it missed in its attempts, I felt more embarassed for some reason. I am pleased that so many people like it beacause as I said, it is alot of hard work to make a film and people should be rewarded for their efforts. Plus if it makes you happy then right on and good for you! But I feel like were not really calling this movie for what it is, maybe in time, but i genuinely question whether I have melancholia or something because I wish I could find something to talk praise about and join everyone else in finding a way to see it differntly. Long live GB but Afterlife... dam. Good CG Egon though at least, he was always my favourite character. God bless old Ramis.

Your analysis of Afterlife is bang on - I had pretty much the same likes and dislikes about it. One thing that really stuck out as missing was a "saving the day/on our own" moment. Given how much fan service they included - to miss out such a key element of the franchise really stuck out.

    Overly-nostalgic boring money-grab.

Which makes it a step up from 2016. This is how far the reboot sank the franchise

I agree with a lot of the points made here by the Drinker. I didn’t hate the movie but it was not the GB3 I waited 33?years for either. To be fair it never could be. McKenna was excellent and the only cast member I connected with. Wolfhard and OConnor were wasted as was Shandor as stated. The ending however, that got me.

I expected to see more of the Spengler farmhouse. In a weird way, it reminded of the Valkenvania courthouse from Aykroyd's ultimately flawed *Nothing But Trouble* .

I feel like it's impossible to do a Ghostbuster sequel that's anything more than a souless cash-grab because the original film was so cynical and obviously money-grubbing. The end of the world is saved...by capitalism.

It's an improvement over the 2016 movie, in that I didn't immediately want to gouge my eyes out.

So a flawed feel good movie with lots of fan service? For 2021 that as good as it gets. Will definitely go see this one. 😄

TBH, I can see the flaws in this film, but it was still vastly more enjoyable than the woke trash they've been putting out lately, and I enjoyed it and had a good time. No masterpiece, but extremely good compared to alternative choices.

I took my 10-year-old daughter, I really enjoyed the movie. The part at the end was very sweet. Great Job by all the kids. McKenna was my favorite character. She nailed her role. The part at the end where she was being helped by her _____________ was a touching moment
