yea, hate to tell the non americans but our grid isnt 110 its actually 277 volt. we use three phase power on the lines and just pull 2 of the 3 lines from the transformer for most residential uses and some commercial as well. Others need the full 277 for heavy machinery or thirsty equipment like massive server banks.

Not bad guys, not bad at all! Now how bout an analysis in the frequency domain? Even many seasoned electrical engineers don't realize the importance of "power integrity". Let's say you have PCIE4 pushing signals at 8GHz, well guess what, something has to source some damn fast current in order to construct these signals. The frequency domain can be used to see the ability of PCB power distribution to provide current at required frequencies.

Having been working in electronics for the past 19 years, from what I recall the most common voltages used are the +/- 3.3V (low power logic), +/-5V (common for logic), +/- 12V, +24V (relay switching), +32V, +48V(telecommunication systems) and +52V(audio) though anything 24VDC and over is usually on specialized electronic equipment such as military systems (RADAR, SONAR etc). Military systems also get into some highly unusual voltage levels as well and the supplies for those being highly customized, I have worked on systems with DC voltages as high as 4250VDC.

PSUs becoming 48V would be the only way I wouldn't be mad at them moving the step-down converters to the motherboard, since that would greatly increase the utility of the our power supplies. I'd actually really love that. Also, the video filled so many gaps I've had. One omission was skipping over the DC/DC step-down convertors, but I think they are just MOSFETs with inductor/capacitor combo? I know that stepping down is fairly simple, or at least you can get ton of them cheaply at every electronic component store :) .

Interesting. I noticed something incorrect in an article about electronics. Your transformer is -not- going to 12V AC. After you go through your rectifier and your capacitors, you'll end up with a DC voltage of what your peak voltage is under AC. So if you go from 120V AC to 12V AC Root Mean Square, you're going to end up with 12 * sqrt(2) = 17V DC which is WAY too high. To be at 12V DC, you'll need to convert to start with a AC voltage of 12 / sqrt(2) = 8.48 RMS.

    Acum lună

3 phase bridge is better. And ..... better than that? Two 3 Phase transformers, one whose secondary is wired as Delta and the other whose secondary is wired as WYE. Slap a bridge rectifier on each and connect the + terminals together, connect the - terminals together and voila ... 12 peak spaced 30 degrees apart. The only thing better is the commutated power from the brushes of a DC motor (a motor generator). That's about it for LINEAR power supplies. Why they don't teach this in schools is beyond me.
