I put the grease in a heavy plastic freezer zip top bag. Throw a bearing in and squeeze grease into it with no mess and no misses. One bearing at a time with some grease fill in the bag for each bearing. My trailer has electric drum brakes so I get the self adjusting type. There is a lockout for backing with surge brakes.

Hey Andrew, I do agree with you that there are many things that should be guaranteed to last the life of the vehicle (you used 50 years as an example), only real reason i see that companies do not do that is because they cant predict the driving style of every single person, many people are very hard on their vehicles which in turn reduces the lifespan of certain parts like brakes, transmissions, suspension, etc. So they dont do that because if they did, i could see many people who do not properly maintain their vehicles and who use their vehicles irresponsibly trying to take advantage of that "guarantee". thats just my thoughts though

Hi young Andrew, like the little lathes, is the light grey one a Colchester Lathe, or a copy of one perhaps ? - As a young man many years ago I worked on one, good solid small lathe, originally made about 15 miles from where I now retired to, right on the coast of North Essex - UK.

Hi young Andrew - TOP TIP/ Adjusting your drum brakes ? drill a hole in the FRONT face of your brake drum, the suitable size for a rubber press fit bung to fit, then adjusting your drum brakes becomes easier on each wheel AFTER taking the wheel off first.. add some high temp grease/ spray silicone/ WD 40 onto the adjuster threads first/ thats my thoughts anyway/ have a good day.. thanks for the video / Ian -- UK.

13:00 There probably mobile home axles off of a 14 x 70 or something. They cut them down to size and welded them back together to make a heavy equipment trailer. 23:00 The other thing about them old axles is our mobile home axles have never been modified and there made exactly the same. That cylinder is designed to to allow for the axles to flex. That way they don't just break in two under heavy loads.

Andrew, there is a “U” shaped section that you put between pointless the hook and trailer. What is happening is when you apply the brakes the the trailer pushes forward on the truck applying the brakes. When you back up the brakes are being applied. Downhill the trailer is pulled away from the truck and brakes aren’t being applied. Old school tech! Or use this: www.centrevilletrailer.com/surge-brake-actuator-repair-parts/3956-mcmaster-carr-manual-reverse-lockout-valve.html

European surge brake manufacturers have a backmatic: if you reverse, the rear brake shoe is unwedged by its friction on the drum and gives way. It does need regular maintenance though, the Bowden cables need to be replaced every few years. But you buy a pair for under 30 bucks.

Unless you lock up the shoes during the adjustment process, you won't know for sure that both shoes are against the drum. Locking them up and then backing them off ensures that the brake shoes are centered in the drum. Also, a brake adjusting tool is worth it's weight in gold because it has a nice bend in it so you won't have to work around those u-bolts.

    Acum 13 Zile

Fully with you on the brake adjusters thing, auto adjusted ones fail too quickly but discs aren't the answer either; size of a disc brake is limited by wheel diameter but drums you can make wider to cope with large loads. Also, ignoring the adjuster issue, parking brakes on discs are pretty useless compared to drums a there's no self servoing action with a disc.

Respectively drums in my opinion are superior for their greater braking force compared to a similar sized disc. Because of the bigger surface area to spread the force, the shoes last longer than pads, and generate less heat. The disadvantage is the relative complexity of the drum and they can't dissipate the heat fast and are prone to warpage of the drum and boiling the brake fluid if overheated. New cars won't have drums on the front and for good reason, but on trailers, which realise less demands (during braking, weight gets thrown to the front), drums are the best for that application.

So. In hindsight, don't you now think that going to electric brakes would have been the better move? Especially with the mickey mouse stuff to the tow vehicle's brake controller? Cheaper, much better (seriously: copper, single-flare, BRAKE lines?), and universal compatibility with any tow vehicle with a brake controller and 7-flat RV connector. Hydraulic brakes make sense on boat trailers that are submerged every time they are used. Not so much on equipment trailers unless frequently towed by vehicles without electric controllers like air-brake dump trucks. But they make controllers for air-brake vehicles now too.

< Former Chrysler master tech when those trucks were new. Based on the sound of that old truck when it started and the fact that the engine was just out, make sure it has a new Mopar crank sensor and the air gap is correct. It's easy to crack the sensor when pulling the engine or set the air gap wrong. They also dont like aftermarket sensors.
