The car they don't want you to buy - Dacia Spring Electric

The Dacia Spring Electric is here to change the way we drive in cities. It's an electric car with a small footprint, but a big old heart... and a big boot too.
This car is unashamedly designed for the city, in fact, the Dacia Spring Electric will barely go over 70mph, and that's only if you've got a good tailwind.
In this video, Rich covers all the vital stats and info on a car that could become to cars what Lime Bikes are to bicycles.

According to an online article, in Romania it is available at 7700 euros (with an old car given in exchange). The state is giving grants of about EUR 10,400, so the final price is EUR 7,700. It makes it the cheapest electric car in Romania and beyond. For example, Germany subsidizes the purchase of electric cars with EUR 9,570. *Dacia has the most affordable electric vehicle in the European market.*

I just done the online booking for my Dacia Spring. In Romania it will b delivered in Sep 2021. Moreover, taking advantage of a 9200 euro government subsidies for each EV purchase the price of the car is lowered to ~8k euros :D So at this price, you'd be a fool not to take advantage.

The problem with this car could be how the battery is managed, the materials used to make the battery and how fast can the battery charge? I doubt that this car has a heat pump and it probably has an air cooled battery.. Tech in this car is rather minimum. I see people leasing this car instead of buying it. If buyers can get tax credits and the price falls down to less than €10k, it might be a decent buy.

140 miles in a country like Australia is garbage and of course it won't help us and it won't be available so electrics for now are for those who can afford the high prices that Telsa and NIssan are asking - a whopping 50000 plus AUD. I asked a man with an electric Mitsubishi how much range he got out of that and he said 100km. There is a long and tough road ahead for any who enter this market. Range and speed we still need.

    • Electroheads

      Electroheads

      Acum lună

Bit confused by this comment to be honest. Sounds like you might have a bit of a misunderstanding about the way electric cars work. They don't use up any energy while on your driveway - the energy consumption only comes when you have to engage the motor to propel the vehicle. And even in that capacity, they work more efficiently than ICE cars as they barely use any energy under deceleration and braking, whereas an engine always needs to keep ticking over at at least 1000RPM regardless of whether the car is moving. They're also much, much cheaper to run. Instead of going to a petrol station and spending 5 minutes and £50 filling up, you just plug in overnight on a slow charge for about £8 while you're sleeping, and wake up with a fully charged car. If that's inconvenience to you, then you are very much in the minority!

I know that the eco freaks love buzz words, but I lived in communism in Romania (yeah, the irony) and I am not fond of those times. If Dacia wants to go bankrupt (I suspect it does, as it has some issues with the local labor unions) then be my guess, go communist and see what happens after couple of "common rides". One hint: it didn't work back then, it will never work, end of story.

People do not buy Tesla because it is electric. People buy it despite it being electric. It has sport car accelleration for a reasonable price. Thus people tolerate the inconvenience of an electric car, i.e. charging times. This car has absolutely no benefit over a petrol car. As slow, half the range, cannot be used in a motorway and not cheaper. People living in a city usually do not have parking place for 2 cars. A petrol city car who can do motorway when needed for this price would be preferred. Nice ascii art but you are the one missing the point.

The very narrow vision. Since there does not seem to be a technology yet where electricity is created from "THIN AIR" then it has to be made from another form of "CONVERTED" energy. (hydrocarbon???) So "THE CONVERSION" would no longer be at the "vehicle" it will have to be further back in the the "ENERGY CHAIN" at a power generating station. So all of Germany's green energy sources were shut down by the weather, and they were all freezing in their homes. So supposing they all had electric cars, they could not go and get groceries either, have you really thought this through???

Personally I think the concept is bad. The car certainly looks fine on the outside and could make a reasonable EV. But why combine a SUV sized vehicle with 27KWh battery and a weak motor? If it's meant to be a city car then it should be a smaller vehicle where the battery / motor will enjoy a better range. And if its meant to be a bigger vehicle it should have a better battery and motor. The worst of both worlds means a bulky slug. Maybe that's why rental / rideshare is the only option because as a car to buy it's going to be arse. Another major point of concern is the Spring is basically a reskinned Renault Kwid, a car on sale in the the Indian market for 5 years. The Kwid scored an ABYSMAL one star in the NCAP test. That wasn't just down to lack of airbags, but also body shell failure. Let's hope Renault / Dacia have done something about that. Why they aren't using the Clio platform (as they're doing for the new Sandero) is just bizarre.
