This tiny railroad across the sea has an important job

The Lorenbahn, the Lüttmoorsiel-Nordstrandischmoor island railway, is famous for the tiny, private trains that take residents to and from the mainland. But that's not why it was built: and it's got a more useful purpose as well.

Thanks to everyone from Landesbetrieb für Küstenschutz, Nationalpark und Meeresschutz Schleswig-Holstein, and to the islanders, for all your time and patience!

Camera operator: Richard Bielau
Producer: Maximilian Thesseling of Klein Aber

I'm so thankful to all the folks at LKN, and the islanders, for their time and patience here: this is something I've wanted to film for so long! Also, on the second channel this week: me, Matt Parker, dodie, and Sophie Ward play a game of No Thanks and make poor tactical decisions:

@ShadowDragon8685 In this case, you do, except you have a truck of 2' gauge. Most trucks I am aware of have a gauge of 4' 8 1/2" a.k.a. "normal gauge".

      Acum 7 Zile

@SiqueScarface You _DO NOT_ need anything to get a railroad-converted truck off the rails; it remains a street-legal, street-drivable automobile, and that's the beauty of them.

As a representative of a consortium of real estate developers, I see this large barrier as an absolute waste of land. It should be dyked and drained. There is plenty of space there to be developed for high density housing, parks and other community amenities. The world is growing and developers need more land to become available to build wealth in our investor base and bring jobs here for global needs.

Very similar to the bog trains used in Ireland by BOARD NA MONA for peat harvesting the tracks come in sections like a train set and they put them down on the bog harvest the peat and then take the tracks away they connect to fixed track as they get near to the power stations for generating electricity. Soon to disappear because they have given up the use of peat to generate electricity

I'm really sorry Tom Scott, but I'm going to start downvoting every one of your videos until the YT algorithm stops recommending them to me I have no idea what has happened here, I'm not subscribed to you, I've watched a handful of your videos over the years and enjoyed them. For some reason however the "algorithm" has decided to stick at least one Tom Scott video in my top recommended videos 100% of the time for many months now and I don't want them there - most are years old and some I've already seen. I'm subscribed to about 70 people, but your videos always take priority despite not being subscribed. This is an experiment on my part, as apparently ignoring your videos doesn't work.

I am wondering if these trains have to pass any kind of inspection? Because 15k euros seems ot be extremely expensive if one builds that thing themselves. The only expensive/hard to get part seems to be a set of wheels with axels. All the rest can be built of scrap metal by anyone who is able to use a stick welder and angle grinder. And some 500 euro rusty or crashed Golf would be perfect donor for an engine.
